Monthly News ~ January

Happy New Year!

I hope you all enjoyed the winter vacation.

We begin this new month - and year - by reviewing the expected behaviors of our Floral Street School FACTS and CARES. We will also reflect and write some resolutions for the new year.

Important Dates:

  • Wednesday, January 11th – PTO Meeting, 6:15pm, Media Center

  • Friday, January 13th – Book Orders due (Forms go home on 1/9.)

  • Monday, January 16th – No School – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Winter Wear

The children do go outside whenever the weather permits. Your child should wear an appropriate coat, shoes, and on those very chilly days - a hat and mittens/gloves. If your child wears heavy snow boots to school, please have them pack a pair of shoes/sneakers to wear during the school day.

Our SEL – Social Emotional Learning – is a very important part of our day.  This month’s word is . . . Responsibility. We’ll review what it means, as well as what it looks like and sounds like, in our daily interactions with each other. Hopefully, you will see its positive impacts at home and outside of school.

In our class discussions and small groups, we’ll continue our work on asking and answering questions, in both fiction and nonfiction texts.

After a review of narrative writing, the children will be practicing informative writing – introducing a topic, stating ideas which include facts and supporting details and/or examples, and finishing with a conclusion.

Math:

Children have learned the concepts of part-whole and number bonds in adding and subtracting to 10. In Chapter 8, Addition and Subtraction Facts to 20, children will learn more strategies for addition and subtraction for numbers between 10 and 20.

  • They will use the concept of place value in these 2-digit numbers to understand the number as a 10 and some ones.

  • The concept of number bonds, with 10 as one part, too, is built on to help develop these new strategies.

  • Number bonds also display fact families – related addition and subtract facts.

  • Doubles facts and doubles plus one  are other strategies that will be introduced.

Social Studies:

We’ll continue using the maps and globes to improve our mapping skills.

We’ll also begin discussing needs & wants.

Science:

We are excited to begin our next unit of study with the “Big Idea” that . . . Light and sound travel and can be affected by different materials. We’ll be doing lots of predicting, observing, and recording – as well as some fun experiments.
